ESX host cannot even ping gateway

Hi All,

Am a newbie to the world of Virtualization.

Our organization have planned to setup an virtual environment for our production facility.

We are asked to setup ESX 4.1 enterprise edition for the same.

Yesterday we started our first step towards it and started with installing ESX host of two of HP servers.

The installation was successfull and when we tried the network setting,it refused to ping even to the gateway. The problem persist only if we set the VLAN id for the Host. The VLAN were already assigned to us by the IT team.

The Host works fine when VLAN is set as 0.The VLAN alloted to us was 402....so when we set VLAN ID as 402,then the Host are unable to ping gateway..

As i have no idea on what could have been wrong..is their any problem with the snetwork setting.

Please let me know on the possible problems related to this....

Regards

Ashesh

Welcome to the Community - It sounds like the physical network is not configured properly - have you configured the porth physical NIC you are using for the ESX management port is not configured for vlan  402

Sounds like your physical switches have not been setup correctly.

The links between a physical switch and the NIC's on an ESXi host are more like bridge connections then switch to switch connections. They need to be configured and setup in a specific way to allow communications. Your physical switches will need to be capable of performing certain characteristics like supporting trunk mode and VLAN tagging.
