shutdown, snapshot, startup scriptable?

hello

to have an absolutely certain consistent backup of my domain controllers, I'd like to be able to shut them down, snapshot them and start them up again via a script (so it can run out of hours). we have multiple DCs, so having one down at a time would not be an issue. I'm completely naive about vmware scripting, so wouldn't know where to start (or even if it's possible). can anyone give me some pointers please?
