I can't expand a SAN disk from vCenter, but I can do this from ESX connected by vsphere client, why?
Hello.
This is not an unusual circumstance. Are you trying to expand a VMFS volume or a VMDK file?
Good Luck!
VMFS.
After expand SAN LUN, can't expand VMFS.
I can see its size expanded in property view, but can't expand in next step when I click Increase button,it display nothing.
Which version of vCenter do you have?
Have you make a storage rescan on the hosts?
Under storage adapter do you see the new size?
Andre
Hello,
what blocksize is defined for the affected LUN? Perhaps it is to small to support the new size?
regards,
Andi
After refreshing if you are seeing datastore is expanded, its means volume incresed.
I think the one increase you are talking about add extend to the vmfs volume.
If you are doing expand from SAN, then you only need to refresh the datastore. (volume grow)
For adding extend you add one more lun (do not expand the same lun which has vmfs datastore) and then properties extend it.

we are also faced the same problem. we expanded the lun by connecting the ESX server from VIclient.
may be its a communiction problem between the vcenter and ESX server which is attached to the new LUN. (the SAN administrator is assigned a new lun to ESX server only the vcenter is accessing via esx server only).since we are connecting the ESX server directly we can able to expand the LUN.
I saw this happen a couple of times, usually if the VMFS file system (the datastore) was created with an earlier version (e.g. 3.33). After expanding the datastore for the first time from a host however, subsequent expansions were possible through vCenter Server.

Rescan doesn't work either.
Yes, I can see new size under storage adapter.
vCenter version 4.0 build 162856, after upgrade to 4.0 build 208111 (update1), doesn't work either.
It's not block size problem. I confirm it.
It's weird, how to resolve this problem?
I'm using VMFS version 7.
where got VMFS version 7? latest is vmfs 5
sorry,I‘ve made a mistake.
I can only create VMFS version 3.33.
I create a new VMFS v3.33 from vCenter, and I can expand it later.
But can't expand earlier created VMFS v3.33, even after the first time expanding from ESX host derictorly.
