Hi all,
I was wondering - is it possible to limit each VM to a 100mbit NIC? When I am creating VMs in VSphere Client I can only select gigabit NIC.
I have a server with a gigabit NIC but I only want to expose each VM to 100mbit.
Regards.
Yes you can, the main question is why would you want too. By limiting a machine to 100MB you are removing the ability to utilize the full bandwidth capability of the physical nic. ESX does a very good job of managing the scheduling of resources between Guest at a host level and with the introduction of NIOC at a cluster level.

I guess your reply makes sense. My main worry was some VM hogging the bandwidth and other VMs becoming unusable. Is this something ESX would handle?
it will handle that by design. what you are talking about is a concept called noisy neighbor.
Thanks for your help. I will keep them all at a gigabit so!
