Hi,

Does hiring managers consider it?I

VCP certification is helpful (not mandatory) just your resume get scrutinize for the opening. Then It depends how you perform in the Interview.

If the company have real VMware Project (It's always big Problem in India), then if you don't have VCP, they will send you to VMware official training.

I would much rather hire a or work with a person without a VCP that is knowledgeable and has relevant experience than a VCP that studied some braindumps and didn't really learn anything.

Not everybody can afford to earn the VCP - the mandatory >$3K class will simply make it impossible for some people to get if their employers aren't willing/able to pay for it.  They may really know the stuff but won't have their certs.

That said, the VCP should hopefully help you get an interview and then it's up to the technical interviewers to determine if you really know the material.

Getting a VCP is important if you're going to be in the market for a new job soon.

Reason: HR people in large companies are told to only look for VCP people (the HR person may not even know what a VCP is and their HR software automatically weeds you out if one of the qualifiers is having your VCP). So, if you don't have your VCP then you may be automatically excluded even if you have years of experience with VMware.

Is it worth the $5,000 it costs you to get your first VCP in relation to increased job opportunity or increased salary? (this would be tuition, overnight stays, meals, travel costs and incidentals).

Yes. There's no question about that in my experience -- a VCP pays for itself.

By the way, I've tracked growth in VMware related job openings on five job boards since 2006 and you can certainly see the benefit from the charts I update every Monday since 2006. Blows away pretty much every other type of technology job growth that I track.

Hi Nick,

I like to quote Scott Lowe's blog post about VMworld 2011's General Session where VMware CEO Paul Maritz gives some statistics:

  • Greater than 800,000 vSphere administrators (that’s the population of San Francisco)
  • Greater than 68,000 VMware Certified Professionals (across 146 countries)

So, at that time, less than one in 10 VMware guys were certified.  Of course, getting VMware certified brings all the benefits of getting certified, in general, but these stats show that the vast majority of folks are NOT certified, yet they're working with VMware everyday.

Just something to think about.

(I got the stats from here: http://blog.scottlowe.org/2011/08/29/vmworld-2011-monday-general-session/)

Cheers,

Mike
