VmWare ESXi - Number of virtual sockets

When I upload a VM to VmWare ESXi I always have doubts about the CPU configuration. From what I found, "Number of virtual sockets" would be the number of processors, in my case two. The "Number of cores per virtual sockets" would be the number of virtual cores per physical socket, in my case I have 6 cores per socket.

Could anyone  enlighten me in that? Why the system lets me choose 16 sockets while I only have 2.
