vCenter 5.5 / ESXi 5.0 questions

We are on 5.0 U3 indefiinitely...I don't know yet when I can replace two hosts not on the HCL for 5.5 and beyond and am waiting to see if HP G7 servers will stay on the HCL for this year's upgrade or new version...

My questions:

1) Can the 5.5 vCenter appliance and web client be used to manage 5.0 hosts and VMs??

2) Can I run the 5.5 vCenter appliance alongside / with vCenter 5.0 U3?? (this vCenter server is already installed and needed for VUM updates to the hosts per se)

  Answer to your queries:

1. Yes, you can manage 5.0 hosts & VMs by using 5.5 vCenter appliance & web client.

2. Do you mean MultiVC configuration? If Yes, I do not think Vc 5.5 + Vc 5.0 VCs can be configured @MultiVC. Otherwise there is NO any option where these VC can be together. One ESXi can be managed by one Vc at a time. Please clarify what exactly you mean here.

Thank you for answering on #1.

Regarding #2 VUM is not included in the vCenter appliance/web client, so if the vCenter Appliance/web client takes over for the existing vCenter, then what is done via-a-vis VUM for doing host remediation?? The VCA does not yet include VUM.

You can install the Windows-based Update Manager on a Windows guest and register the Update Manager plug-in when connected to the vCSA with a vSphere Client.

ChintanWaghmare: If I understand you correctly, what I should do is the following:

1) Install VCA

2) Move hosts from current vCenter Server to VCA (we have only 3 hosts)

3) Install VUM only to another Windows guest server that also has SQL Server on it

4) Replace 5.0 vCenter Client on my notebook with 5.5 vCenter Client

5) Then do I point the newly installed 5.5 vCenter Client to the new VCA server?? or to the server now containing VUM??, then install the 5.5 VUM plugin, and only use the 5.5 vCenter client to run VUM??

Tom,

To use update manager you need to connect to VCA using your vSphere C# client (windows based client and provided you have the plugin installed) and to use full feature of vSphere 5.5 you need to connect to your VCA using the Web Client.

Yes.. I do agree with Vicky.

Q1. VCSA does not support Linked mode, so VCSA and vCenter server cant be on same environment.

Also why you need both at the same time.. if they manage different ESXi means ok.. but as vicky says one esxi can be managed by one VC at a time.

Q2.  There is no Linux based equivalent to Update Mgr. you can install the Windows -based Update Manager on a Windows guest machine and register the Update manager plug-in when connected to VCSA with vSphere Client
