Portable apps are quite different.

Are application designed to work locally (for example to be used on a USB).

Application virtualization can do also this... but can do more... like create a virtual filesystem and a virtual registry isolated from main environment.

And can work also with application not designed to be portable Smiley Happy

Well, VMware View is Desktop Virtualization and XenApp is Application Virtualization.

They are used to solve different problems and should not really be compared.

VMware View and XenDesktop are more similar products that can be compared.

VMware ThinApp and XenApp can be compared, but have some big diffrences.

Best regards,

Have a look at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_virtualization

http://virtualfuture.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/vf-appvirtchart092008.pdf

Concepts of App-V and ThinApp are simple (both work with bubble).

XenApp work a little different.

Andre,

I administer XenApp so I know how it works. Comparison chart in second link is very interesting, Thanks a lot.

Can anybody tell me what are the steps to implement ThinApp ? Does it work on top of VI / vSphere ?

~ Cheers,

ThinApp works like a "unistaller" program.

You must have a clean machine (better if a VM, with workstation is fine), then you install thinapp (is like the sequencer for App-V) you start it and start the installation of your program.

It will capture all the files, registry keys and so, and then you can generate a "project" or a "package".

Then copy the exe to the destiation... That's all!

(note the there are a lot of other features, like link two package, stream a package from a file server, ... )
