I understand that for the re-certification that you may upgrade to a higher-level certification (VMware documentation notes VCP5-DCV upgrading to VCDX5-DCV) and that you may upgrade to the same level of certification on the newer version of vSphere (VCP5-DCV upgrading to VCP6-DCV when available).
Is it possible to upgrade both the version and focus while re-certifying?
Ex. VCP5-DCV -> VCDX6-DCV (when available)
vs.
VCP5-DCV -> VCP6-DCV -> VCDX6-DCV (when available)
I would like to minimize the amount of coursework as much as possible. I am very much interested in upgrading to the V6 version of the certificate but would rather spend my efforts on the VCDX6 than re-earning a cert so to speak. Any input is appreciated.
I'm not sure I fully understand the question. Simply put once a VCDX you only ever need to upgrade your VCDX version. There is no VCP--> VCDX. Honestly, all you have to do is upgrade your VCDX5 to VCDX6 by taking the V6 design exam. Re certifying the lower levels is not required to mantain your VCDX status. The design exam for upgrade has long been the route to upgrade your VCDX
This blog post covers it
I appreciate the feedback and apologize for any confusion.I am currently VCP interested in upgrading to VCDX - I would like to upgrade to VCDX and re-certify in one swoop. Can I upgrade from VCP?-DCV (VCP4, VCP5) to VCDX6-DCV or do I first need to upgrade the VCP to the VCP6-DCV and then upgrade VCP6-DC?
I Dont think you are clear on the VCDX process you cannot go from VCP to VCDX. ylu need to pass the VCO exams for DCV and submit an application to defend. This is all documentEd on the VCDX page on the vmware certification site. I'd suggest you read through that to get s full understanding of the process. there is no VCP to VCDX upgrade as you are seeming to look for.
Even to stay within the same version and technology, the first stepping stone from VCP is to VCAP or VCIX.
So, with an end game of VCDX6-DCV, what you actually need to know is:
1. Can you go from VCP5-DCV > VCAP5-DCA & VCAP5-DCD > VCDX6-DCV?
OR
2. Can you go from VCP5-DCV > VCIX6-DCV > VCDX6-DCV?
At this moment it is not possible to answer either question, as neither the VCDX6-DCV or the VCIX6-DCV have a published "upgrade path". You'll have to wait til such paths are published.
Have a look here at the current roadmap for more: VMware Certification Roadmap for 2015
I was trying to generalize and realize I may have caused more confusion than helped explain what I was asking. Thank you for helping me figure this path out. The VCDX is the ultimate goal.
Below is essentially what I am curious about and see similar posed in message 2473773 now that I re-word it again. Can you upgrade your "level" and "version" at the same time or do you have to upgrade to the current "version" first? (I realize you can also upgrade the "level" in the same/old "version" but would prefer to stay as current as possible).
1a. Can you go from VCP5-DCV > VCIX6-DCV > VCDX6-DCV?
1b. Can you go from VCP4-DCV > VCIX6-DCV > VCDX6-DCV
OR
2a. Do you have to go from VCP5-DCV > VCP6-DCV > VCIX6-DCV > VCDX6-DCV
2b. Do you have to go from VCP4-DCV > VCP6-DCV > VCIX6-DCV > VCDX6-DCV
Thanks again for everyone's feedback. I will continue to look for the published upgrade paths also.
I can answer 1b and 2b now.
VCP4-DCV certifications will have expired by the time VCP6-DCV or VCIX6-DCV are released, by March 10th in fact.
VCP4-DCV holders can recertify before March 10th by taking the VCP510 or VCP550 exams to achieve VCP5-DCV - this will be necessary to avoid having to take training, as those VCP4-DCV holders who let their certification expire will need to take training if they wish to step back into VMware certification.
I do not believe that is correct. The VCP4 was discontinued last year in May; VMware continued issuing VCP4 certifications through that time. These show to be valid for 2 years for issue date (which means valid for another year as of this writing). I have not seen anything that indicates that these valid certificates will expire when the VCP6-DCV is released next week. If I am mistaken I would be much appreciative of any link confirming this early expiration. I agree that VCP4 certifications that were previously obtained and not updated/renewed would now be expired.
I will try asking certification@ and follow up here with their response. Thanks for your help everyone.
My apologies - I forgot it was only May 2014 when VCP410 was retired.
So, we shall indeed have to wait til the v6 DCV certifcations are released and the various upgrade paths are defined.
