Multipathing Policy

Hi there,

VMware SAN guide says:

The ESX host automatically sets the multipathing policy according to the make and

model of the array it detects. If the detected array is not supported, it is treated as

active/active.

NOTE: Manually changing Most Recently Used to Fixed is not recommended. The

system sets this policy for those arrays that require it.

Our FC SAN is not in the SAN list of VMware supported, but our FC SAN is real active/passive mode,

Do I need to change the mutlipathing policy from 'FIX' to 'Most Recently Used'?

Note just says ' Manually changing Most Recently Used to Fixed is not recommended', so how about maually changing Fix to Most Recently Used?

Thanks.

This change would affect you in the event of an SP failure. A Fixed path would cause you to lose connectivity with your SAN when the new path became active. Since your SAN is not supported your conclusion about the MRU is correct. However, with an Active/Passive remember the new MRU SP path will be the failed over path until the next occurence. Since the SAN is not supported I would recommend testing the MRU configruation to ensure successfully failover.

If you SAN is active/passive than MRU would be the way to go normally.
