ESXi + Intel Quad core Q6600 2.4Ghz: configuration says processor socket = 1

I have sucessfully installed ESXi on my machine with the following config:

1) Asus MB: P5K-VM

2) Processor: Intel Quad Q6600

3) NIC: intel Pro 1000

Issue When looking from the configuration tab -> processor, ESXi says

Processor socket = 1

Processor per socket =

Logical processors = 1

Why does it only see one socket instead of 4? It does recognize processor as a quad core. Am I missing some thing?

It should report only one socket, but you should also see 4 processors per socket and a total of 4 logical CPUs. A few others on the forum have had the same problem with whiteboxes and quad cores. I would suggest that you first update the BIOS to the latest for your MB.

Yes. Upgrading BIOS has resolved the issue.

Few other questions:

1) Even the ESXi sees four processors now I have not seen any improvement in terms of the performance. Any reasons?

2) Other note, after the fresh installation when I was switching from one vm to other, the console window was almost instantaneous to come up, now it takes atleast 30 secs to come up. I was hoping to see better performance after ESXi recognize 4 processors but it did not help. Any ideas?

3) How many VMs can I sucessfully run with the following configurations.

a) Processo: Intel Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz

b) Host memory: 8GB

c) 4 SATA 2 hard disks.

c) Most of the VMs are running windows server 2003 standard.

4) How to best utilize 4 sata hard disks on the host?

Hello,

Were you able to get your machine to run properly on ESXi with the described configuration? I'm about to buy a machine with a similar configuration, and I'd like to know.

Thanks

Pascal
