VMWare ESXi 3.5 vs VMware Server

HEllo,

can anyone compare and share your ophinion about two products - VMWare ESXi 3.5 and VMware Server?

Of course ESXi comes with "host" OS - Linux, and VMware Servershould be installed on your OS (it can be Linux as well).

As I understand it is possible to reach more hardware compatibility with custom OS and VMware Server.. Does anyone has more arguments on ESXi or VMware Server?

thx

ESXi as you have pointed out is more specific in hardware it will run on. With ESXi you get to use more of the resources of the Server as the hypervisor uses very few resources. You can mange ESXi with vmware virtual center and can setup clusters (you get VMFS cluster filesystem) which allows for vmotion and HA (Licensed features $$)

Vmware server can be used for virtualizing production systems 9I know some folks who do) but for high performance you will want to go with EXS or ESXi.

ESXi is the better option for production use. Vmware server is kind of a poor mans workstation. This is my opinion and I suspect someone will be yelling at me in 3,2, 1 Smiley Happy

Check out the following for a list of ESXi features.

VMware Server is more of an entry point virtualization solution while ESX is a true Enterprise solution. If all you want to do is virtualize a few workloads and have a test box then VMware Server may be all that you need. If you want to put virtual machines into production and have the ability to live migrate a running VM from one host to another the ESX is really the only solution.

JeffDrury, are you talking about commercial version ESX or you mean ESXi?

It should be not right to compare ESX and VMware Server, because one is free and other is not..

I made this post, because we are thinking about migration from ESXi 3.5 to VMware Server, because we have a lot of problems with hardware (actually RAID) of our server, here is our problem:

As we could not find any sollution we have to move to VMware Server -or it is not right solution?

I guess this comes down to how much you are willing to pay for your solution. Both ESXi and VMware Server are free products, but in their free versions there are limitations. With ESXi there is a limited hardware set that you can run, and with VMware Server you are not truly running an enterprise class virtualization hypervisor. You can license ESXi and use Virtual Center for management which will give you all of the benefits of ESX 3.5, but there is still the limited hardware set that your can use.

In your particular situation I would recommend a few solutions:

1. Install ESX3.5 and test to see if the same performance issue exists. You can evaluate ESX 3.5 for 60 days without having to license and that should give you enough time to determine if performance is acceptable. If the performance measures up then you will need to license the product.

2. Find hardware that is on the ESXi compatibility list and test for performance issues. If performance is acceptable you can use ESXi in the free capacity until you want to use the advanced features that come with licensing.

3. Migrate your VM's to VMware Server. I don't expect that performance will improve with this solution and you will have to deal with the overhead of the guest OS. Again I would not recommend running VMware Server in a production environment. It may be suitable for test/dev work but in the long run either of the ESX platforms will be more reliable.

Free software is nice and can be a fit in some situations, however when you reach a certain scale licensing the product to obtain the advanced features is beneficial and will utimately save time and money.

ESXi is not built on Linux. The vmkernel is VMware's own code, but ESXi will use drivers (they are modified) that come from Linux source or for other components (CIM, dropbear).

mmm nice, I did not knew that..

Is here any way to transfer drivers (kernel module) from Linux to ESXi? Or from ESX to ESXi?
