Copying a virtual machine to another Mac

I have a Linux (Ubuntu) VM running perfectly in VMWare Fusion on my Apple 10.8.5 system. I've now copied the whole virtual machine file (package) to a new machine running 10.9.5, installed VMWare, and am trying to open it. It opens, and gives no errors (claims it is running) but the screen is black - I can't see anything at all happening. How do I figure out what's going on with this thing - what's the procedure to have a VM working on another Mac - something besides just copying the VM package?

Shut down (not suspend) the VM, and remove all snapshots.  Then it should copy over just fine.

On the new system, assuming it's 'resuming' into the black screen, you could just reboot the VM from the ' Virtual Machine' menu.

Hold 'Option' and do a 'Reset' (which force-reboots the VM).

Does that work?
