Fusion 8.5 has same problem in Sierra as did Fusion 6.0.6

Fusion 6.0.6 in Sierra gave the eror:

Unable to open file "/Users/johnk83776/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/Boot Camp 3.vmwarevm/Boot Camp 3.vmdk":

So I downloaded a trial of Fusion 8.5 and I get the error:

Unable to open file "/Users/johnk83776/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/Boot Camp 3.vmwarevm/Boot Camp 3.vmdk":

Which is of course the same error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hello JK,

Looks like you are trying to use a boot camp partition as a VM.

In this case if there's a problem the solution is to simply create a new boot camp partition VM.

Basically a VM here is a sort of wrapper that points to the actual install on your boot camp partition.

Something is wrong in that wrapper, but you can just create a new boot camp VM.

Steps are:

File -> New -> Install from Boot Camp -> Select "Create a boot camp virtual machine" -> Continue -> Enter password

hope this helps,

Wil,

Thanks very much for your advice.  Unfortunately, it's never that easy.

After following your instructions, I get:

Version mismatch with vmmon module: expecting 308.0, got 279.0.  Try reinstalling VMware Fusion

Closing that window gives "Failed to initialize monitor device"

I followed the instructions to manually uninstall Fusion, and then tried to reinstall the Version 8.5 download, with the same result.

Thanks for all your help.

JK

Hi,

Yep, sometimes things are a bit more tricky as they should be.

The vmmon module is a kernel module.

Sounds like you will have to reboot macOS to resolve that.

Eg. uninstall Fusion, reboot macOS, install again.
