Can't start VMware Workstation in Mandriva 2009.1

I'm switching from Ubuntu to Mandriva. I've had no trouble running VMware Workstation in Ubuntu. After installing Workstation for Linux in Madriva I fumbled through adding kernel headers to get it to run.

I then hit another barrier. I get the message that "several modules must be compiled and run."

Then I get the kernel updater dialogue box shown in the second attached image.

Then the error message shown in the first image. Unable to build kernel module.

I can't get into the directory with the log-file. I haven't figured out yet how to change the permissions - I'm working on it.

What can I do to get this running?

I can't even isnirtall WS 6.5.3 on Mandriva 10. The installer can't even find gcc - its not on the list of installable programs. Can anyone help? Your compile error I've found on ubuntu when upgrading the kernel but on Ubuntu it can find the compiler and headers.
