Cores!

Hello all,

I'm using VMware 7.0. I'm trying to make my OpenSUSE 11.3 vm faster. I have 4GB of RAM, and an AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M320 @ 2100Mhz processor on the host. The VM currently is assigned 1GB of RAM, with 1 processor (1 core). I want to increase it to 2 (or even 4!) cores or 2 processors (with any number of cores). I know I can 'cos the documentation says so, but its not so clear as to what those changes mean or what effects they would have. Can anyone please explain?

adino.

1 virtual CPU = 1 physical core. In your case this means you can assign up to 2 virtual CPU's to any of your VMs. However keep in mind that the host OS also needs some processing power.

With only a Dual-Core CPU assigning more then one processor core to a VM will in all likelihood degrade the performance on both the Host and the Guest.  You need to have a Quad-Core CPU or better to really gain some performance without degrading the Host and the Guest when giving the Guest 2 processor cores.
