Printing within DOS guest

I have the following problem:

Environment: a DOS install as guest on an XP host with a HP Deskjet 720C connected to the parallel port.

I've not been able to get this printer working in the DOS guest environment.

However with a copy of the VM guest on another machine (also XP) with an Epson Stylus Color 640 and a Star Matrix printer at my disposal, either printer works perfect with no additional settings with the exception of the installation of the Epson Stylus Color 640 driver at the host.

Any ideas or suggestions to get the HP printer to work properly?

At time of submitting the problem my knowledge of VMWare was very rudimentary.

Since then I've gained more insight in the possibilities of VMWare. I now use the option to reroute the parallel port to a file and print this file on another system.
