VMware Tools in commandline mode

Is there a possibility to run (not install) Vmware Tools in commandline mode? I do not want to install X for shrinking disks.

I use Workstation 5.5 with a Linux guest (Other Linux 2.6. kernel / Debian) on a WindowsXP host.

Shut down the guest and run "vmware-vdiskmanager -k ". Use "-d" for defragmenting.

Maybe this can help, too, but I haven't tested it, yet: http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vmtools.html#vmshrink

Hi, thanks.

The comands (defrag and shrink) work fine in principle (... completed successfully), but there is no difference in filesize after shrinking.

Is there any reason why?

Have you choosen to allocate the disk space for the .vmdk files immediately during the guest creation (called "Allocate disk space now")?

No: "Disk space is not preallocated for this virtual disk. Virtual disk contents are stored in one or more files up to 2 GB each."

These are actually the files allocated (a cloned machine):

08.02.2008 14:56 160.366.592 Other Linux 2.6.x kernel-cl1-s001.vmdk

08.02.2008 14:56 1.408.368.640 Other Linux 2.6.x kernel-cl1-s002.vmdk

08.02.2008 14:44 607 Other Linux 2.6.x kernel-cl1.vmdk

Once these files have been smaller:
