Workstation 7 Multiple NIC Setup

Hello All,

I'd like to use two NIC's on my HOST. I'd like one NIC to just be used on HOST for the workstation I use...and another one which is PCI NIC to be used for WS 7 and the virtual machines. How can i go about doing this.

can i assign VMNet1 to the second NIC and connect virtual machines to that...I am sort of confused...any explanation is appreciated...

Thanks Much

NO - if you assign vmnet2 to the INTEL card it will be bridged - not "hostonly" - don't get confused by the terms Smiley Wink

select vmnet0 and assign the nic that is already plugged in right now

select vmnet1 and make sure it is set to "hostonly"

select vmnet2 and assign the INTEL PRO 1000

select vmnet8 and make sure it is set to "NAT"

Hi

open the Virtual Network Editor

select vmnet0 and assign the nic you want to use for the Windows 7 guest

select vmnet1 and make sure it is set to "hostonly"

select vmnet2 and assign the nic you want to use by the Hosts system only

select vmnet8 and make sure it is set to "NAT"

thats it - then configure your Windows 7 VM and all other VMs so that they use vmnet0

Thank you sir.. and this should work if i am planning to use all VM's in bridged sort of networking...as in EVERY SINGLE VM will have it's OWN IP...

I'd like to have all the VM's to have intra / internet connection...

just wanted to double check Smiley Happy

yes - I assumed you have the nic assigned to vmnet0 connected to your intranet

Here's my setup...Windows 7 x64 as HOST

Windows Server 2008 as GUEST OS

Windows 7 x64 as GUEST OS

VMware Workstation 7...

as far as I remember VMnet0 is what is being utilized right now. Only NIC i have is the built in one in the MB

i'd like to take the other one out of my space PC which is an Intel PRO 1000 (was used with esxi) and stick that in.

I hope all is clear now Smiley Happy

plug in the PRO 1000 and assign it to vmnet2 - then it will be used by the host exclusively - unless you specify a VM to use vmnet2 too

Just to get it right...(sorry i'm a noob)

Hi

open the Virtual Network Editor

select vmnet0 and assign the nic you want to use for the Windows 7 guest

select vmnet1 and make sure it is set to "hostonly"

select vmnet2 and assign the nic you want to use by the Hosts system only

select vmnet8 and make sure it is set to "NAT"

thats it - then configure your Windows 7 VM and all other VMs so that they use vmnet0

so all i do is assign VMnet2 to Intel Pro 1000 card and set it to HOST only...

and rest i still do as you have stated above

so VMNET0 = windows 7 guest and other guests

VMNET1 = host only or not?

VMNET2 = host system only

VMNET8 = NAT

sorry for the confusion...just want to be sure I understand what you are saying...

alright sir..thanks much..i'll do exactly how you've mentioned....i'll be doing this over the weekend...i'll definitely get back with results..though I don't have any doubts...VMware Networking seems to be quite confusing and I see it's a huge topic on it's own that needs to be learned...soon enough Smiley Happy

too bad none of the colleges / uni's think it's important to have Virtulization Courses....

Thanks for all your help. It was confusing to read what you were saying but after I opened up Virtual Network Editor and set up the NIC's it all made sense to how it works. Smiley Happy
