I use ESXi Essentials v5.5, and have 3 hosts, 5 VMs - a small setup. I don't have vCenter installed yet, but want to do this to get familiar with the Web Client. If I install vCenter on a VM, is it possible to shutdown that VM and manage the machine, upgrade virtual hardware, etc? I am not clear if I would be able to do this if vCenter isn't running. I am under the impression that vCenter (and/or SSO) needs to validate the credentials of the Web Client.
That is not true. It was reported at VMworld 2014 that the C# client will still be supported in vSphere 6. I have also been evaluating the beta and release candidate of vsphere 6 and they both have a C# client.
Yes, you will not be able to manage the vCenter VM with the web client once you shut down the VM, but you can still manage it with the C# client. That is why the C# client is not going away for a while.

You can use the C# thick client to connect directly to the ESXi hosts to manage the vm's and machines. 5.5 U2 allowed the C# thick client to modify hardware v10 VM's.
Using this method you don't have to worry about having SSO, Inventory Service and vCenter online.

I realize I can use the C# Windows client, but I have also read that with v6, it won't be supported at all. I'm trying to get a handle on all this for the long haul. So is it true that if I have vCenter installed in a VM, I wouldn't be able to manage that VM once I shut it down? Seems like a chicken or egg quandary,

Excellent, thank you so much! I don't have a specific need for vCenter at the present time, other than curiosity. Good to know the "old legacy" Windows app will be with us for a while yet.
I recently upgraded our VCSA to 5.5u2 along with the C# client. I'm still not able to edit v10 vm's. Do you happen to know if the ESXi hosts also need to be at U2?
Thanks
