Removing a Disk from a VM

Hello all

Running ESXi 8.0 U1 and for one VM that has 3 disks I tried to remove a disk and get the message:

Failed to reconfigure virtual machine xxx. Invalid configuration for device '5'

Can anyone help on how to overcome this?  I tried adding a new disk and then removing it and it works.

Thank you.

@aarm A few suggestions

  • Does the VM have any snapshots, which could be blocking the disk removal? If so can you remove them?
  • Are you trying to remove the disk whilst the VM is powered off or on? If on, have you tried when powered off?
  • Try vMotion to another host then try removing the disk
  • Try Storage vMotioning to another datastore then try removing the disk?

One of these may clear the lock or whatever is generating the error.

Verify also that there isn't any CD/DVD attacched on VM and that there isn't any workload on the 3 hard disk

Thank you for the suggestions.  There was a snapshot and I had to delete it.  Then I could delete the disk.
