how to configure and install latest linux kernel inside ubunto 10.04 guest os

Hello,

I am running windows XP Pro on an HP laptop (Elitebook 8530p) using vmplayer 3.1.2 build-301548 (latest available as of posting date). I used vmplayer to install Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS 32-bit edition from an ISO using the vmplayer "Create a new virtual machine"

This Ubuntu comes standard with the 2.6.32-24 generic kernel, but does not provide the kernel config in /proc as would be most useful. Not sure how to extract the kernel config, or exactly what to configure manually. I am a Gentoo user by experience, and have been configuring and using linux kernels natively for many years.

Everything works fine, but I want to try the newest kernel, currently 2.6.35.6. I attempted a configure and install, updated GRUB within the vm, etc. But the vm won't boot.

I also discovered that if you let the Ubuntu System update manager update the kernel, headers, etc that the VM will also fail to boot afterwards.

Would some kind soul please tell me how to configure a new kernel within the Ubuntu vm?

Thanks!

Does anyone have the answer?

Is building a new kernel inside a VM even possible?
