We have recently rolled out vmware and currently have two ESX 3.0 servers. Over time we will of course increase the number of ESX 3.0 servers. I am currently looking at Veritas' NetBackup to achieve the backup of our vmware set up. Can you recommend any backup solutions? Many thanks.
We use Tivoli (IBM) backup solution. We have two hardware solutions for storage and a server for backup job management. It works great and it is cost-efficient. Very very easy to setup and maintain.
If this is helpful please award points.

We use esXpress (http://www.esxpress.com) for our ESX backups, work great, definitely recommend it.
Their backups run in the virtual space using VBAs ( virtual backup appliances). Their free version provides complete full vmdk backups and they have an inexpensive Starter Edition which enables their Delta technology which was a key feature for use. Other versions provide additional features. Also their support is excellent.
Also esxpress has just released a Beta providing File Level Backups so it now provides a total solution ( Vmdk backups and File Level ).
We are also using Tivoli Storage Manager for our backup. We run the TSM agent within each VM for nightly incremental backups of the OS. We also use TSM with VCB to achieve a full backup of the VM files. In the event of a failure, we simply restore the most recent full VM back-up (which already has the TSM agent loaded) and then run a restore job via TSM to finish the restore process. This model is relatively new to us and we haven't had the need to use it for a true recovery scenario, but all testing has looked very good.
Hope This Helps,
Mike
We are a TSM shop also but haven't done the VCB hookup yet...that is in a few months.
Can anybody recommend a free backup solution please?
