InetAddress Ping Service in place of SNMP for Network Device Platform

I have a number of devices on my network I'd like to monitor that cannot have an agent installed on them and also do not offer any SNMP capabilities. I would like to add each of these devices as a seperate platform and would like to poll them for Availabilty via the InetAddress Ping Service:

The Network Device Platform defaults to SNMP. Is there any workaround to offer InetAddress Ping in place of SNMP for these type of devices?
