I am setting up two vSphere ESXi 4.1 servers to start our upgrade process. I have a LUN that contains our templates presented to my ESX 3.5 servers. I also presented this to my new 4.1 servers. I also set up a cluster with only EVC enabled. Now when I try to deploy a new VM from the template to one of the 4.1 hosts in the cluster I get an error (nothing more specific that "error with template... .vmdk"). As a test I moved one host out of the cluster and tried deploying a new VM from the template to this host. That worked.
Here's my issue. In order to run vmotion I have to have EVC enabled. The only way to enable EVC is to set up a cluster. I also need to deploy VMs from templates to the hosts in this cluster. Is there a setting I'm missing that would allow the deploy to work to the hosts in the cluster? The user I am logged into vCenter is an administrator so I have full rights within vCenter.
Thanks.
Have you tried to convert the template to a VM and see if has the right virtual hardware and can be powered on?
Andre
can u please provide more info?
Please paste that complete error message that it is throwing......tail -f the vmkernel logs and var/log/messages and hostd logs at the time the error throws up.

This was the issue. I converted the template to a VM and associated it to one of my 4.1 hosts then converted back to a template. I left the virtual hardware at version 4 until we get everything migrated. But I was then able to deploy a VM from the template.
Thanks.
