What are the requirements to safely backup vCSA 5.5 using embedded DB?

Now that thevCSA5.5is production ready and the embedded Postgres DB supports 100 host and 3000 VMs,  the next question is how do I safelybackupthevCSAappliance?

Thanks,

No recommendations for vCSA backup?

Also,  how do you restore using VDP if vCenter is down/needs to be restored?

Hey MattG,

you can backup the VCSA using VDP. Not sure if I would recommend it though.

In case your VCSA crashes, you would have to deploy a new Appliance, add your ESXi host and register the VDP appliance to the new VCSA. Then you can do a restore.

Duncan wrote a short blog post about it: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2012/09/19/my-vcenter-server-5-1-appliance-crashed-and-i-was-using-vdp-...

I would rather choose a backup solution for VCSA that's able to restore without a running vCenter Server. Can't tell you which one though, as I'm still running the Windows vCenter in production Smiley Wink
