i config update manager to send email when new updates downloaded.
but i receive below error messages in "Events" tabbed page,
Alarm vmware Update Manager email alert on Datacenters failed to send e-mail to xxx@xxx.com
i already configured mail setting in administration|virtual center management configuration...... |mail.
but i can only configure the SMTP server and the sender account, nowhere to set the password, so i'm not sure can it send email with no password set?
Sender address rejected. Is the email address on the same domain as your smtp server, or is it different? If it is different, then you will have to allow that domain relay rights on your SMTP server. Otherwise, just change it to be on the same domain as your SMTP.

You dont need to specifiy a password when configuring the sending options. Are you sure you've got port 25 open from your virtual centre server to your mail relay?
Can you try a telnet on port 25 to the mail relay host and check connection?
antivirus software usually stops port 25 traffic for fear of SMTP mail relay attacks. Make sure your antivirus does not block the email. If you can, turn it off, and re-try the send of email, and most likely, it will succeed. Take a look at the antivirus rules and turn off that "feature".

i have not install firewall in this VCMS, and windows firewall is disabled too. the mail setting is the same as what i set in outlook, except that no password set.
Again, do you have a virus scanner installed? virus scanning software, mcafee, norton, will block port 25 by default. Check your anti-virus settings.

this VCMS is a VM, and it's for test only, so no virus scanning software or firewall installed.
is there only method to test my mail setting just like in outlook?
Then I would try what wgardiner suggested previously. Open a dos prompt, and 'telnet 25' from your vc server.
If you receive a connection, you will see some text appear, otherwise if you get no response or a connection refused, then there is some kind of firewall in the way, or you may have relay restrictions on your smtp host that don't allow the vc server to send mail through the relay.

i received a connection and some text do appear. so i'm sure the problem is not port 25 blocked.
You can also try a manual email through that telnet connection.
Run 'telnet mailhost_name 25'
Type 'helo vc_server_hostname'
Type ':email_to_send@domain.com'
Type 'data'
Type 'This is a test message'
Type '.'
See if that comes through to the rcpt address from the administrator address. You should use the values you setup in the smtp settings. If any part here fails, then you'll get an error message right away, and can tell which part of the mail send is failing.

thanks for your patience.
the log is:
220 mail.gmail154.cn4e.com MAIL@35 - ESMTP Mail Service x64 Version: 2.01.10
helo Prod-VCSRV
250 mail.gmail154.cn4e.com
:xxxxxx@xxxxxx.com.cn
502 Error: command not implemented
there must be some command to get help or available commands. i tried, but '?' and 'help' doesn't work
Whoops, My bad, the syntax is a little off:
It should be:
mail from:<user@domain.com>
rcpt to:<user@domain.com>
data
.
Make sure you type slowly, as the backspace key does not work as you expect. Instead of deleting an entry, it adds the backspace character to the stream.

this time, syntax is correct. the error message is:
553 <xxxxx@xxxxx.com.cn>: Sender address rejected: not logged in
so maybe we should tune the server side
Sender address rejected. Is the email address on the same domain as your smtp server, or is it different? If it is different, then you will have to allow that domain relay rights on your SMTP server. Otherwise, just change it to be on the same domain as your SMTP.
