I am trying to vMotion from an Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.5GHz E5420 to an Intel Xeon Dual Core 2.33GHz 5140.
I have enabled the no execute memory protection and the intel virtualization technology in the bios on both hosts.
From what I can see the vMotion compatibility groups are B and C. For B<-->C vMotion it tells me to apply SSE4.1 mask ()
The Mask for SSE4.1 is row ecx and the mask is -

0--- -

I have done that and tried to vMotion to another host and am getting the following message. Not sure what else to try.
It's in the DRS cluster settings.
Right click the cluster and go to Edit Settings..
You'll see a setting for VMware EVC.
If I remember right, this cannot be done live. The VMs need to be powered off. Try it. It won't let you turn on EVC it wants the VMs powered off.
EVC basically does the CPU masking for you.
I've currently got 3 Nehalem (Xeon 5500) servers and one Xeon 5400 host in my cluster. EVC works perfectly.
I tried this as well initially. I never was successful at it. I ended up going to vCenter 4 and turning on Enhanced vMotion Compatibility.
I am using vSphere 4........
How do you turn on Enhanced vMotion compatibility?

Perfect!
I will give that a try tonight.
Enhanced Vmotion works perfect.
Thanks!
