how to create a backup from a virtual machine on vmware server 2.0.2 on debian linux 6?
i need to re-install the whole server, because of that i need to backup the vm to an external drive. how to do that? thx!!

Take a look at the following KB article for instructions of how to copy/move virtual machine files: VMware KB: Moving or copying virtual disks in a VMware environment
Basically you will need shutdown the VM, remove any snapshot and copy/move the virtual machine files (or entire folder) to the new destination.
