Filename or folder limitations for VM backing files in the datastore?

Hi

Does vCenter (we are using 2.5 specifically right now, but will be on vSphere 4.0 soon) impose any limitations on the datastore folder and/or filenames? We are seeing that VMs created with a name longer than 32 characters will have the folder truncated to 32 characters in the datastore. The filename of the vmdk file is also truncated to 32 characters plus 5 (for the ".vmdk").

This caused a rather nasty issue where we assumed we could construct the backing filename based on datastore and vm name, and obviously we now know we have to special case for long vm names.

Does anyone know if this is a known limitation of the vCenter, or could it be the underlying SAN doing this?

thanks,

Rob
