Adding Vkernal port for vmotion.

Hello,

I do want to add VMkernel so can enable Vmotion, but want to confirm first, before change on production server.

This is my Vswitch for ISCSI network:

So do I need to separate them first into 2 vswitch with 1 nic for 1 subnet and add vmkernal on each switch.

or can I simply add one, give 1 IP address and it would work?

Thanks in Advance.

Hi,

vMotion will work with one VMkernel, one NIC and one IP.

Thanks Tim for the reply,

so in my case I should divide my subnet's into 2 vswitch, and add vkernel to any one subnet common in both the host.

Hi,

I would do it on one vSwitch.

What benefit would you hope for by using 2 vSwitches?

Thanks Tim for the reply,

Unfortunately there is a generation diff between Intel zeon CPU's my ESXi 5.5 hosts, so still I cannot use Vmotion.

Create a cluster then and enable the right EVC mode for your CPUs. This way the new CPU functions in the news hosts will be disabled and you are able to vMotion.

Here's a EVC FAQ: VMware KB: EVC and CPU Compatibility FAQ
