A vDS is essentualy a managment front end. I know there is alot more to it han just that but at a very high level that is the case.
when you deploy a vDS there are "hidden" vSwitchs (just the same as a normal vSwitch) on the ESX server however they are mamaged though one managment interface, vDS, this enables alot more functionality. But nothing has realy changed from the perspective of how the ESX servers communicate over the network.
vmware description it like:
"VMware’s next generation virtual networking solution for spanning multiple hosts with a single virtual switch representation."
This PDF should help:
http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMW_09Q1_WP_vSphereNetworking_P8_R1.pdf
When you say what prot is it using are you refering to the SC, vkernal port, etc as they all use a diffrent TCP port to communicate.
