Stuck at 6.0.7 update 2 (ugrade to 7X or 8?)

Hi,

I have been at 6.0.7 since I set up my ESXi server probably 5 years ago. I would like to upgrade to 7 or 8 but I am totally confused as to how. I have been reading and researching for a while but I really can't see a clear path. It looks like it may be better to just reinstall the latest OS.

My problem is how to save my VMs? I tried an export of my biggest machine witch is 4TB and cancelled it after a day of being at 50%.

I saw posts about an ISO GUI Updater but I'll be darned if I could find it.

I guess I'm asking what is the best way for me to get to 7 or 8? I need to get my VM over as well but it's apparent I can't use Export.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!

TIA...

Please allow me to ask two questions:

  1. You say version "6.0.7". Are you actually talking about version "6.7"?
  2. Did you already verify that your hardware is supported with ESXi 7 or 8? see https://www.vmware.com/go/hcl

Thanks Andre,

Well, my version says 6.0.7 update 2 so I guess that is 6.7?

I understand what you are saying about compatible and I think during my reading I did see that they discontinued certain CPUs after 7.3?

So I think I should maybe shoot for 7.3 and not 8.0 (I cannot get that matrix thing to spit out anything based on my server).

CPU is Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1225 v5.

Thanks again,
