ESXi newbee needs an assist

Hey, I recently installed the free product ESXi and created my first VM with Windows 2003 on it. I'm happy with this VM and don't want to lose it.

My goal was just to become familiar with the ESXi and virtualization in general. Now, it seems my VMWare product might be used to test VDI & thin clients so I have to update the OS due to the build timeout issue. My build is: 103909

I have to apply the patch to ESXi (ESXe350-200807812-O-BG - PATCH) but there is no command line interface on the console. I have a choice of applying the patch or reinstalling ESXi with update 2. I don't want to lose my Windows VM so I'm reluctant to reinstall the whole ESXi product. But, also, I don't know a thing about Linux or associated commands.

Any suggestions for the best route?

Welcome to the VMware Community forums. See this article about patching your ESXi host - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Patch_3i_without_VC.html. You won't have to reinstall ESXi.

Hey Dave:

You're awesome!

I used the VIU client and it all went well. I had to reinstall the VI Client first because I didn't have the VI Update component but then everything was easy.

I'm glad I joined the VMWare ESXi community. It's good to be here....

I'm sure we'll meet again soon..jmsTek
