We are using vSphere 4, some user don't want to install VMware tools on the guest. Is there a way for the vCenter to get the ip and hostname for the guest?

The vmware tools are needed.

Seems I have to look for other ways to solve this.

you have to keep in mind installing the vmware tools in the virtual machine is a best practice.
